Bigger, faster, faster! So crazy is the Indy 500 race
in Indianapolis
When Hollywood actor Chris
Hemsworth waves the green flag, the wild hunt begins in the oval. For almost 40 seconds, the cars race through
two long straights and curves, 200 times four kilometres, deafening noise - the
Indy500 is one of the world's most traditional circuit racing car races.
On Sunday, 33 riders with a top
speed of almost 380 km / h will drive for three hours around the crown of the
US IndyCar series, with over 300,000 fans watching the motor racing spectacle
in Indianapolis, Indiana."The Indy500 is the largest race in the world and
the largest single sports event on the planet," said Indianapolis Motor
Speedway President Douglas Boles at a press conference. From a German point of view, however, it is in
the shadow of Formula One.
Indy 500 2018 at Speedway, USA: In
Indianapolis, the bear is racing in motorsport
Indy500 opens a view deep into
the American soul: much more show, party, and national pride do not work. Fighter jets start at the oval, which is
officially located in the purpose-built town of Speedway, including the
metropolis of millions of Indianapolis. Of the originally completely
paved stretch, only the one-yard wide start-finish line is left, but the oval
is still affectionately called Brickyard.
The pace car will be driven
this year by NBA Allstar Victor Oladipo of the Indiana Pacers, US pop star
Kelly Clarkson will sing the national anthem, to which the fans will sing the
unofficial anthem "Back Home Again in Indiana". And the winner does not squirt champagne - but
traditionally takes a big gulp from a milk bottle.
Formula 1 vs. Indy 500: These are similarities and
differences of the racing classes
But there are points of contact
to motorsport premier class. Last year, two-time Formula One
World Champion Fernando Alonso (Spain) moved up to Monaco for the Indy500. However, his engine struck after 179 of 200 laps. This year, with Andretti-Honda's Marco Andretti, grandson of the
1978 Formula 1 World Champion and 1969 Indy winner, Mario Andretti. Father Michael Andretti was a successful Indy driver, in 2006
Marco finished second to his father in Indianapolis.
The Indy500 is the classic of
the American IndyCar series. The cars are slightly smaller
than Formula 1 cars, equipped with less technology, but slightly faster, and
there are more overtaking manoeuvres and some spectacular accidents. The pure race is the motto, the prize money totalling over 13
million dollars (about 11 million euros), the winner receives about 2.5 million
dollars (2.1 million euros).
Hélio Castroneves is aiming for his 4th title
at the Indy 500
After 2001, 2002 and 2009,
43-year-old Brazilian Hélio Castroneves (Penske-Chevrolet) wants to win his
fourth Indy500 title this year. He has competition in his own
team by Josef Newgarden (USA). He's a tough "Indy
dog" - as Americans love him. In 2016 he successfully raced
several races after a serious accident in the IndyCar series with a broken
collarbone and 13 bolts in the shoulder. But maybe Danica Patrick will
make her first victory for her eighth and tentatively last Indy start. In 2009
she finished third.
Since the American company
Liberty Media has taken over Formula One, the rumors about a revival of Indy500
as a Formula 1 race around: Already 1950 to 1960, the Indy500 was one of the Formula
1, but hardly a European started. From 2000 to 2007, a US Grand Prix was driven on a section of the
Indy Oval - and the winner was named Michael Schumacher five
times.
Will Indy 500 and Formula 1 soon make common
cause?
"Formula 1 is very big,
and the Indy500 is the epic home of motorsport, so we would very much welcome a
return, providing entertainment of the highest caliber," said IndyCar boss
Mark Miles to the magazine "Autoweek" last year. Also McLaren CEO Zak Brown nourished in the
magazine "motorsporttotal.com" speculation about a double event from
Indy500 and Formula 1 on a weekend: "It makes sense for Formula 1, to be
on one of the greatest racetracks in the world."
