Justin Wilson succumbs to his head injuries
Wilson's parents, his wife, and his brother publicly publicized the death on Monday night. "Justin was a loving father and devout husband, as well as a highly competitive racer who respected his colleagues," the letter said.
Race driver hit by debris on the head
Wilson was hit by a piece of debris on Sunday in the 179th of a total of 200 laps. This came from the car in front of him by Sage Karam, who had crashed in a curve in the track wall. At Pocono's four-kilometer circuit, racing cars reach top speeds of more than 320 kilometers per hour. After the accident, Wilson was taken to a hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvania. From there came in the evening the message that he was in a critical condition and in a coma lie.
Wilson, who drove for Jaguar and Minardi in Formula One in 2003, is the first pilot since Dan Wheldon in 2011, who died in a major US racing series. He leaves behind a wife and two daughters.
